Stephen Jr
I Stephen son of Stephen and Mary Ann Hales was born in England, Rainham Parish,
C
ounty of Kent in the year of pour Lord 1820. My father was a professor of religion.
When I was 11 years old, my father removed to America with all his family. We tarried
there five or six years when Parley P. Pratt came and preached to the people where
my father resided. In a short time my father and mother united themselves with the
Church of Jesus Christ and removed to the place of gathering in Far West, Caldwell
County, Missouri.
A number of brethren started off on an expedition and I with the rest went to search
out the designs of the mob. We came to a place where they had camped the night
before and buried a cannon. I found the cannon and some powder and balls... A small
number of the brethren including myself went in search of them. We left our homes
about the 12th hour of the night. About the break of day we found the mob, encamped
on a small steam called Crooked River. We marched down in battle array. Their guard
shot one of our men and a number of our men shot their guns at him....
George
George Hales, son of Stephen and Mary Ann Hales Hales, was born at Rainham Parish, County
of Kent, England   October 10, 1822 (christened).
In the spring of 1832 when George was nine, his parents emigrated to Canada, settling in
Scarborough, where they remained for six years.
When the Saints were driven from Far West by mob violence I moved to Quincy, Illinois where
in the autumn of 1839 I began to learn the printing trade as an apprentice. This was in the
office of the Quincy Whig. I worked there three years with board and clothes as my only
remuneration.
I was baptized at the age of 18, while still in Quincy, by Elder Orson Hyde on April 19, 1840. ...
During the spring of 1851, he and his family came with the Harry Walton/ Garden Grove
company into the valley. On the journey they buried their mother by the ancient ruins. Upon his
arrival he was engaged to work in the office of the Deseret News and worked there for many
years.
