In order for this event to be successful we need to have as many people as we can get. So
please pass the word. Some family members might not feel connected if their last name
isn't Hales but they are as connected as anyone else. The fact that we have an apostle to
speak to us is a rare event in itself.

We will have pictures and artifacts that are rare and interesting. We will also have histories
and genealogies of these ancestors that you will have access to.
For those who do not use a computer please write or call.

Come and see the famous patch work quilt that Mary Isabella's son
won at a church raffle. It was cut into two pieces when his
daughters got married and we have located both halves. It will be
on display along with the book written about all the famous
women that donated an individual patch for the quilt. It is a real
treasure.

The Hales family name comes from the Old English word “Halh” meaning a
nook, recess or remote valley, hence one who came from such a place.
Variant spellings of the same name include Hails, Hailes and Hayls. It seems
unlikely that the Hales surname originated from a single person or place in
England . More likely an ancestor can be found in each of the places
known as Hales including Hales in Norfolk , Hales in Staffordshire, Hale in
Greater Manchester, Hale in Hampshire and Hale in Surrey .

The Domesday Book of 1086, along with other ancient texts such as the
Ragman Rolls (1291-1296) and the Curia Regis Rolls contain traces of the
Hales Family including Adam de Hales and Robert de Hales. In 1375 the
"de" prefix was dropped on English Place names and people named de
Hales became known simply as Hales.

The Hales family motto is
“vis unita fortior” translated from the Latin as
“united force is stronger”. This motto is inscribed on the Hales family coat
of arms which is reproduced here:

The colour of the shield is red - the colour of bravery, the colour of the
arrow shafts is yellow, with the feathers and arrow-points white. The
mantling is red and yellow. The color of the ribbon around the embowed
arm designates the branch of the Hales family that claimed the arms.

The devices on the shield were at first the choice of the bearer. These
were selected to commemorate a military exploit, a crusade or pilgrimage,
or to identify some prowess of a particular kind. Sometimes they were
borrowed from the arms of a great leader with whom the family was allied.
The design on the Hales arms is a pun on the name. It doesn't take too
much imagination to visualize the combat in medieval times and the arrows
falling like hail, hence, the three arrows, points down, on the Hales arms.

Freedom of choice in these devices ultimately led to argument between
families when identical devices were chosen. To arbitrate and eventually
assign the coats-of-arms, official heralds were appointed by the king. The
heralds formulated the rules and became the controlling body in the
designs used and in granting arms to the knights that bore them.

In time, coats-of-arms became hereditary. They were passed down from
generation to generation by inheritance. Heirs and heiresses inherited not
only the father's estate, but took the family coat-of-arms as well. The Hales
family was very prolific, and it soon became necessary to distinguish
different branches. This was done by tying different colored ribbons
around the embowed arm on the crest.
